Policy / campaign enquiry responses

Black lives matter
Anti Fracking campaign

Every day, I receive dozens of policy, petition and campaign emails from constituents concerned about a huge variety of national issues. While individual constituency enquiries will be answered by email or letter, due to the vast increase in the volume of emails now being generated, I can no longer guarantee replying to these individually and am therefore posting my responses on this section of my website.

HM Treasury

Cost of Living Crisis

Current inflation is being driven predominantly by rising energy costs, provoked by surging demand after the pandemic as well as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which in turn has put pressures on living costs.

Fuel Duty

Calls to Cut Fuel Duty

In recognition of the unprecedented circumstances pushing up fuel prices, I welcome the decision announced at the Spring Statement to cut fuel duty by 5 pence for a full year across all fuel duty rates.

Energy

Energy Prices

Current inflation is being driven by rising energy costs, provoked by surging demand after the pandemic as well as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which in turn has put pressures on living costs.

LGBT Flag

Conversion Therapy for Transgender People

I firmly believe that conversion therapy has no place in a civilised society. Being lesbian, gay or bisexual is not an illness to be treated or cured.

Channel 4

Channel 4 Privatisation

I share the disappointment of many of my constituents at the decision to privatise Channel 4.  I remain unconvinced by the plans put forward by the Government, notwithstanding sustainable alternatives.

Beer Duty

Support for Pubs and Beer Duty

I have always been a firm supporter of the wine industry, and until recently, I co-chaired the Wine & Spirits All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG). In this time, I was proud to lead a campaign for the suspension of wine import certification.

Building Safety

Building Safety Act

The Government is putting in place an entirely new regulatory regime for high-rise buildings, that will take a proportionate, safety-first approach. The Building Safety Act sets out a clear pathway on how residential buildings should be constructed and maintained.

Home Office

Nationality and Borders Act

The United Kingdom has a proud history of supporting those in need of protection; our resettlement programmes have provided safe and legal routes to better futures for hundreds of thousands of people from across the globe.

Health and Care

Health and Care Act

The unprecedented nature of the Covid-19 pandemic reminded us how vital our health and care system is to all of us. The NHS will always be free at the point of use, and any proposed reforms aim to continue to improve the quality of these services and patient outcomes.

Fracking

Fracking

Ministers have always been clear that fracking should only proceed if the science shows that it is safe, sustainable and minimises disturbances to local communities. Therefore, I welcome the Government’s decision to halt fracking considering the latest evidence.

Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill

Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill

An element of the Conservative election manifesto at the last election was a pledge to restore confidence in the criminal justice system.  This Bill is an important component in delivering that pledge.

Animal Sentence

Animal Sentience (Welfare) Bill

I was pleased to support the Animal Sentience (Welfare) Bill and I am proud that the UK has consistently led the way on animal welfare. We pushed for a recognition of animal sentience to be included in Article 13 of the Lisbon Treaty in 2009 and we secured legal recognition that animals can feel
