British politics is in a moment of deep uncertainty.
A government elected on promises of stability and competence is now mired in internal division, ministerial resignations, and a growing sense that it has no coherent plan for the country.
Week after week, the cracks widen. Nowhere is this clearer than in Labour’s refusal to confront the spiralling cost of welfare.
The Government expects to spend £33 billion on welfare payments this year — more than the total raised in income tax in 2025. That is simply unsustainable. Yet Labour still cannot bring itself to act.
This paralysis is not accidental; it stems directly from Sir Keir Starmer’s inability to face down his own left-wing backbenchers. A Prime Minister who cannot command his party cannot hope to lead the country. That loss of authority was laid bare last week when the Defence Secretary and his Minister of State resigned, unable to support the long-overdue Defence Investment Plan because the budget has been squeezed to breaking point by the Government’s soaring welfare bill.
Their departures bring the total to seven ministers who have resigned in the month since May’s disastrous local elections - an extraordinary level of instability for a government not yet two years into office.
The political fallout is already visible. The Makerfield by-election takes place this Thursday, and Andy Burnham has already signalled that, if elected, he intends to use a return to Parliament as the platform for a leadership bid, and ultimately a run for No 10.
It is a remarkable situation: a sitting Prime Minister facing open manoeuvring from one of Labour’s most prominent figures, while his own government struggles to maintain basic cohesion.
Meanwhile, the issues that matter most to people here in Kent continue to be ignored. My constituents raise them with me every week: the crushing tax burden, high energy bills, the pressures facing small businesses, and the chronic lack of infrastructure in the south east caused by relentless housebuilding without the services to match. These are real-world concerns, yet the Government remains distracted, divided, and directionless. But there is an alternative.
Under the exceptional leadership of Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative Party is doing the hard work of developing a serious, fully-costed plan to strengthen our country and rebuild our economy.
A future Conservative government would: Cut energy bills by £200 per household through our Cheap Energy Bill; Restore control over our borders by leaving the European Convention on Human Rights and ensuring the primacy of our own courts; Back small businesses through the Back Our High Streets Bill, cutting taxes, reducing red tape, and helping local entrepreneurs thrive; Deliver meaningful welfare reform, including reinstating the two-child benefit cap and restoring face-to-face PIP assessments; Support young people by scrapping the 3% interest added to Plan 2 student loans; Strengthen law and order by hiring 10,000 more police officers; And boost the housing sector by scrapping stamp duty on primary residences.
Kemi Badenoch is already pushing the Government into a series of U‑turns while steering the Conservative Party back towards its core values of hard work, personal responsibility and national self‑confidence.
The party is setting out a serious plan to get Britain working again, backed by the competence and experience needed to deliver it.
At a time when the country needs clarity and direction, the Conservatives are ready to provide both.
