I’m pleased to have signed the Repair and Reuse Declaration, which sets out a clear, practical route away from our throwaway culture and towards a more sustainable future that values repair, reuse and longevity.
The Declaration calls for repairs to be made more affordable through tax cuts and repair vouchers, for Right to Repair rules to be extended to all consumer products, and for stronger product design standards that make repair easier by default. It also supports a repair index, helping consumers make informed choices about durability and repairability before they buy.
The Government now has a clear opportunity to back this growing movement, working with businesses, communities and consumers to make repair the easy, affordable and accessible choice for everyone.
For anyone looking to save money, cut waste or give a much-loved item a second life, I encourage a visit to the Malling and District Repair Café at East Malling Village Hall, 10:00am–1:00pm on Saturday 13 June. The volunteers do excellent work, and the café is a strong example of local action leading the way towards a more sustainable, less wasteful future.
