Illegal vaping is an issue I hear about from constituents and, sadly, one I have seen first-hand when out in Maidstone Town Centre. I am particularly concerned around the availability of illegal products, the number of ‘pop up’ vape shops, and the impact this is having on young people.
This week I met with Gillian Golden, Chair of the Independent Vape Trade Association (IBVTA), in Parliament ahead of today’s launch of Local Vape Action in Maidstone
This new partnership brings together Kent County Council, Public Health, Trading Standards, Maidstone Borough Council, Kent Police, and the Independent British Vape Trade Association to tackle under-age vaping head-on. Their work will include making sure retailers understand and meet their legal responsibilities as well as targeted follow-up visits where concerns are identified.
This Maidstone pilot will be closely evaluated and will help shape a national Local Vape Action programme in 2026, building on the successful Community Alcohol Partnership model.
Keeping children and young people safe is an absolute priority for me, and I welcome this joined-up, preventative approach. I look forward to supporting this vital work locally.
