So many parents, including many across Maidstone & Malling, have been clear: the harm social media is causing to children’s wellbeing, behaviour and attainment can no longer be ignored.
Children are banned from nightclubs, casinos and violent movie screening because we know exposure to these things is harmful. But in the digital age we have failed to apply the same common sense approach.
Last week Peers backed an amendment to raise the minimum age for social media use to 16, following strong Conservative leadership and support from across Parliament.
This isn’t the end of the process. The amendment now moves to the House of Commons, where MPs will have the chance to back it.
Labour must decide whether they will support meaningful protections for children, or continue to delay.
