In this column, about a year ago, I highlighted a persistent problem that always becomes more acute at Christmas time. I make no apology for returning to the subject now. Domestic violence doesn't discriminate against age, race, class or creed. It permeates every section of society and needs to be recognised by us all if it is ever to be curbed, controlled and contained. Actually to call it 'a problem' is rather a bland benevolence. 'A living nightmare' is more of an apt description.
And let us be under no illusion as to the extent; In England and Wales two women are killed every week by their partner, or ex-partner. On average, women experience 35 assaults before looking for help. One third of attacks on women take place for the first time when they're pregnant and 90% of attacks take place when a child is either in the same room, or the adjoining room, where they listen and learn. And whilst 75% of victims are women, this scourge affects many men too.
Statistics struggle to improve and this Christmas, as families and couples feel the effects of a bleak economic winter, the usual financial and emotional pressures will be magnified and even harder to manage.
Regular readers will know that my stance on many issues is one of optimism and hope, rather than darkness and gloom. That mindset prevails and whilst today's column paints a somber sketch, there is light on the canvass too.
For those affected, directly or indirectly, it is vital they know that help is at hand. And for those who may suspect that someone they know is secretly suffering, there are places to go and people to tell, in safe anonymity.
Details are available on the Domestic Violence page in the Advice and Benefits section of Maidstone Borough Council's website www.maidstone.gov.uk. Alternatively call Women's Support Services on 01622 761 146 or the Men's Advice Line on 0808 801 0327.
Remember, in our country, no one has a right to abuse, and no one has to suffer in silence.
