HELEN'S SHADOWS SEE THE SPECTRUM OF BRITISH POLITICS

A pummeling Prime Minister's question time, then afternoon tea with Ann Widdecombe in Westminster

an opportunity to become involved in a high profile Parliamentary campaign

In December 2008 they won the 'Shadow Helen' competition. The prize - an opportunity to become involved in a high profile Parliamentary campaign and a chance to see our nation's politics and politicians at work until the next general election. It is one of Helen Grant's action initiatives to engage younger people in politics.

In the latest part of their unique experience Sophie Jones (18) of Cranbrook School and Blaise Matthews (18) of Maidstone Grammar School were given a private tour of the palace of Westminster before joining Helen in the House of Commons to witness Gordon Brown and David Cameron 'head to head' in what might be one of the last Prime Ministers' Questions sessions of the current Parliament. The next general election could take place as early as March 25th this year

The 'Shadow Helen Competition' has been a fabulous and innovative way to connect young people with politics

Sophie said ""I had a brilliant experience at the Houses of Parliament and found PM's questions absolutely fascinating. The 'Shadow Helen Competition' has been a fabulous and innovative way to connect young people with politics - never have I been more sure that politics is an utterly relevant way for the next generation to effect change in our society at every level". Blaise said "'I have been able to see politics first hand and understand what an exciting and intense process a parliamentary campaign is".

During the rest of the day they met several members of the Shadow Cabinet and watched the Shadow Minister for Immigration and MP for Ashford Damian Green in a select committee on Human Trafficking. The trip was concluded by having tea with the Rt Hon Ann Widdecombe MP in the Pugin Room overlooking the Thames.

"I hope Blaise and Sophie will share their experiences and encourage others to consider becoming involved in politics. I am very grateful to Ann and her staff for making the arrangements for the day".
